back to tradition…

In teaching the foundations daily (drawing, painting, art history) i’ve been feeling a pull toward tradition in my own work. Typically working against traditional means, i’ve become dulled to the sensationalism (especially as the rise of street art culture becomes more and more popular in the fine art world) . The idea of the ‘gimmick’, the ‘one-liner’ has lost some of it’s charm.  I’m now focused on the formal in relation to concept… (this may change, as artists, and humans we flip-flop constantly – inconstancy being so consistent…) Aiming to create tension, irony – contradiction in the work.

I’ve been looking at a lot of Diebenkorn, Theibaud, O’keefe, Motherwell, Rothko, Kline, Stella – how they handle the composition in relation to subject matter…
